Toddler's hit-and-run case prompts Chinese soul-searching

A 2-year-old Chinese girl is "close to brain dead" from injuries she suffered after she was struck by two hit-and-run drivers and ignored by passersby, China Daily reports.

The incident, caught on surveillance video and posted online, has stirred national soul-searching among many in the Chinese media who "decried a lack of morals" by those who ignored her plight, the Xinhua news agency reports.
Yue Yue was struck by two vehicles only minutes apart in Foshan, Guagndong province.

As she lay in the street in a well-lighted market area, more than a dozen people walked past without helping her or even stopping.

Finally, a trash collector, 57-year-old Chen Xianmei, comes to her aid.

Donations have poured in for the girl's family and also for her rescuer, who moved her to the side of the road and called out for her parents.

The China Daily says one of the two drivers was caught by police and the other turned himself in. Both say they didn't see the child before the accident happened, according to the police, China Daily reports.

It says the first driver who knocked down Yue Yue "expressed regret, deep sadness and apologies to the child's family."
